THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION - PIXEL DUST

RUNNING TIME: 51 min.

The Mothers of Invention in the early sixties. This DVD collects about 50-minutes' worth of footage (mostly in color) of the Mothers of Invention in 1967-68. Actually there are only four sources for these clips, those being a 1967 promo film; a couple songs filmed at the Bitter End in New York in 1967; a brief snippet of the group performing on British TV in October 1968, and the band playing on the German TV program Beat Club on October 6, 1968.

Overall, the clips capture the band right after their move from song-based material to a more wholly instrumental-based fusion of rock, jazz, classical, avant-garde, horror movie soundtracks, and humorous novelty. There's little singing in any of the scenes, in fact, and what singing is here is sometimes wordless scatting (often in a sardonic, high doo wop-influenced manner).
The main criticism of what's on offer here is that most of the segments are too short. The promo film is just a montage of fuzzy black-and-white images of the band while part of the recording of "The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet" plays on the soundtrack; a running caption on the bottom explaining the early Mothers' history in the briefest of terms indicates that this was taken from a TV program broadcast long after the '60s, not from the "promo film" itself.

Some of the group's loony humor is captured in the just-slightly-longer portion from the Bitter End, particularly when they seem to be deliberately messing up a mime to "Son of Suzy Creamcheese," though the visuals aren't quite as hilarious as the legend might lead some viewers to anticipate. The British TV clip is the shortest bit, with some shakiness to the image reproduction/transfer. It's the Beat Club performance (with sometimes distracting psychedelic color negative effects, interrupted by a brief Frank Zappa interview segment from 1970) which is most substantial, in fact taking up the majority of the DVD.
At that point, the Mothers were well into their more improvisational and experimental late-'60s phase, playing on and on without discrete breaks between songs; even when they go into a snippet of "Let's Make the Water Turn Black" from We're Only in It for the Money, they do it sans vocals.

Mintypinto's notes:
OK folks, so here's the story. Just over 15 years ago I had a friend doing some research work at the BBC, I gave her a short shopping list of things that I would love to see her raid the archive for and amazingly she came up trumps with a few selections.
The 23 minute session that FZ and the MOI did at the BBC in London.
Now the ridiculous bit of the story:

The video tape supplied to me was of fantastic quality, a dupe taken from the master and put on to VHS. I kept the video for years and watched it a few times, amazing playing, the band are in top form, JCB and Art Tripp keep up a tremendous rhythm with Roy Estrada and all solos from the band are great.
About 5 years ago I got a friend to digitize the tape to DVD along with a load of other stuff that I had recorded off TV, he did a pretty good job and I was so pleased with it that I threw the VHS copy away.
Of course as time has gone by, technology has got better and better to the point where I could have made a better copy on my £150 TV DVD Harddrive recorder.

Anyway, if you have a fantastic copy of this already, don't download this but share your copy with us all.
If you have a good copy of this, download this one, it may be better.
And if you have a poor copy or worse still, don't have it at all, this download is mandatory. It's brilliant.

Incidently, I noticed at 20 minutes a very quick fade in and out of sound, the band go from King Kong to another track which to the untrained ear may sound like a segue but it ain't. This implies the band played for longer then is on the tape but this is all I was supplied with. My guess is that the edit was done at the time and what ended up in the BBC archive was all that was left.

Still, we are lucky to have this much great video, fortunately the cameraman were not trying to imitate a bad acid trip by pull focusing and zooming in and out all the time as was the style of the day so what we get is a fairly well shot recording of FZ and the Mothers at the top of their game.

FRANK ZAPPA, THE MAKING OF 200 MOTELS 1971
RUNNIBG TIME: 35 min.

SETLIST:
“35 minutes, Roelof Kiers 1971.
In 1971 Zappa was working on the motion picture 200 Motels in London. Roelof Kiers recorded that. It was the first film in the world that was recorded on videotape.”

The quality of this version here is excellent; as good as it’s ever
going to be I guess.
It was broadcast a number of times, late April 2007; on the digital “VPRO Holland DOC” channel. I recorded it on April 25th 2007, starting at 20:50 (take or leave a couple of minutes). It’s partly Dutch, but mostly English with Dutch Subtitles.

It says HD at the top right corner, which does NOT
mean “High definition” unfortunately, it means Holland Doc(umentary).

From digital cable receiver, analog out to Hard disc recorder (Kiss DP558) recorded in MPEG2 best quality, over local network uploaded to computer, converted VOB to MPEG2 in VIDEOREDO, clipped in Studio saved as DV, recoded to MPEG2 in TMPEGenc masking 6 toplines to get rid of noise along the edge, authored in TMPEG author.

PAL 720 * 576, 25 fps, MPEG2 7000 kbps VBR
